Edge

Nothing cuts through the meaningless trivialities of life like a brush with death. As a fact of existing humanly, that we are on the way to our end tends to put an edge on awareness. One feels intensely alive and disinclined to be wasteful.

The autumn leaf symbol presents the all-embracing inter-dependence of all beings, and yet, the singular gift of it all is the unique occasion of existence. For to be aware of the issue of being is to make of the quest and question of being, mine.

As Rameau says, “Walk close to the edge of the world my friend. Mindlessness lives far away in a land famished for sense and meaning. If I turn to you with an awareness of my own end, you become a wonderful and mysterious being, rich in spirit and precious beyond measure.”

Today, set all affairs in relief against this edge. Things that do not matter will fall away; affairs that do, will glisten like the sharpened blade of awakened mind.

Watch for the temptation to please others, for that is a game played far, far from the edge. Do you hunger for more satisfaction? Then make of every meal the last supper.
