Transmission

Most of what you know has been transmitted by means other than explicit education. Your mother laughs in a certain characteristic way; your father clears his throat in a way that announces disapproval: what it means to fear, love, relate has been set wordlessly right from infancy, transmitted by way of mother hen.

The means of transmission could be genetic or subliminal, even unconscious. To believe that the aching of your heart is not connected with the pain and sorrow of the world, of human history, seems an unlikely grasp at an identity based upon denial. 

On the other hand, each chick that leaves the nest will follow their own path. In a sense, everyone begins from scratch, which means, in this case, that starting from nothing is never really starting from nothing.

Today, if something brings your own breath to a stop, brings your voice to a cul-de-sac, your perspective to a rigid and petrified form, consider this: start breathing… the space is not as confining as you think; start singing… there is no need for a certain result; start laughing… truth may be a festive carnival all glitter, spectacle and joy… here today, gone by morning.

Of course, the deep wiring may come back again and you will sound once again just like your father, however, to be human is to be transient and therein lies the creative freedom that makes all significant difference.

Therefore, start from scratch and a little laughter.
