Return to first position
Dance instruction builds from a beginning with first position. No matter what level of dance, the call to return to first position is like a foundation for learning, developing and refining one’s dancing.
From this image, we can derive many useful points of learning. First, no matter how badly an activity goes, one can always start again. Lousy meditation session? Come back to the breath. Forget a few steps in your mamba bamba wamba? Come back to the beginning.
Secondly, there is dignity in that upright return. A beginner starts the same as a master: every misstep being almost a gift of being able to return to first position. For the master dancer, everything flows from that first position. … an entire choreography of painted movements contained and ready for unfolding within that first noble pose.
Today, even if what you are working on falls to pieces, there is a very strong and well-grounded sense of just starting from the beginning until you get it right. If there is any element at all of keeping priorities straight, employ the first position technique.
Good day to see things through such as writing assignments, organizing information on a solid foundational premise, and editing.
Good day to sort through issues with family and those with whom you have traveled thus far… not for the purpose of indulging in what went wrong, but rather in order to renew dignity by returning to first position.
