An organized group banded together in, if not purpose, regimented step and rhythmic drumbeat, seems to march on the premise that everyone should do likewise.
The phrase, ‘get on the bandwagon’ suggests joining in. One might ask, “Where is this parade going?”, however questioning tends to put one off-step and potentially one could be asked to leave the group: marching orders.
This is why you are a rebel. From many sides, the individual is asked, perhaps expected, to join the band, however, each band member must question the fit. At almost every turn, your consent is required, so much so, that the sovereign nature of individuality is drained of vitality. We become pale strangers to ourselves.
However, one can always ask “Why?” and one can say, “Let me off the bus at the next stop”. To live life as an issue… a quest and questioning that is ever one’s own… is to call, and be called, to your own marching orders. To do so, is to live life as an act of rebellion. It may be quiet, tasteful, stylish or gentle, but it is still rebellion.
Be alert for the number of times you will be asked your consent today. Not all such requests undermine individuality, however, the most insidious of them tend to be those to which you are most habituated.
