Surprise, cheeky surprise
Timing is everything when spontaneously pulling a prank or unexpected surprise.
The idea here is to watch sudden shifts in energy, as when someone pulls your towel off just as you come out of the shower. These kind of sudden changes are not always funny, nor always taken with good humour, however, today, all looks good.
Imagine a bride, all excited and solemn as she goes through her big wedding day. At the prescribed moment, when the veil is to be lifted and a tender embrace is expected to seal the deal, so to speak, the groom snatches the veil away. Shock! Oh my!
Or, consider the buddha’s silence when asked questions that tend not to edification. Once a man came slowly, reverently, before the buddha, his face so serious and filled with piety. He asked, “I sit and sit in meditation. Never does peace come to me. My knees hurt. My back aches. I have to pass wind often. Others notice. How can I reach enlightenment when others suffer because of my practice?” The buddha smiled. There was a long pause. Then the enlightened one farted with such force that everyone burst into laughter and the poor man, so startled, broke wind repeatedly as he snorted and guffawed.
The moral: come covered in the veil of your own unknowing; leave awake and laughing.
For some reason, this anecdote was not included in the annals of the buddha dharma.
Listen for words that take you unawares. It can be a good shift in how you are carrying yourself… from solemn and serious to laughter and high vibration.
